pejorative

Wayne 교수님과의 대화는 지난번에 본 ice hockey game 를 주제로 시작되었다.
당시 경기는 STL blues와 vancouver canucks 의 경기였는데,
canucks와 관련하여 이어지는 이야기들...

원래 canuck은 pejorative 로 캐나다 사람들을 칭할 때 사용된다.
쉽게 비유를 들자면 우리나라 사람들이 중국사람들을 짱꼴라, 짱깨... 일본사람들을 쪽바리라고 부르듯이...
(동양친구들이랑 이야기 할 때 이렇게 그네들을 부르면 알아들으니 조심해야...정말...)
그런데도 캐나다인 본인들이 canucks라고 팀 이름을 만든 것은 재미있는 일. :)

단어의 뜻을 아는 것도 재미있지만, 더 재미있는 것은 그런 부류에 속하는 세부사항들을 알아가는 것! :)
예를 들자면, canuck, gringo (중남미에서 미국인들을 경멸적으로 부를 때), kraut (독일인들을 경멸적으로 부를 때, 발음 자체도 왠지 독일 엑센트가 나는 듯한 ...), frog (프랑스인들을 경멸적으로 부를 때, 개구리를 식용으로 먹어서 그렇게 부른다나...)

최근에 아마존을 통해 order한 Noam chomsky의 'what uncle sam really wants'에서
Uncle Sam도 이런 류의 pejorative 인가 싶어서 여쭈어 보았더니... 그건 아니고...

Uncle Sam은 전형적인 미국인을 의미하고, 참고로 John Bull은 전형적인 영국인을 의미한다.
